Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex Autism Spectrum Condition that is characterised by an anxiety driven need to be in control and avoid every day demands. Children and young people with PDA require careful handling and a different approach to that usually adopted with individuals with Classic Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

This workshop is delivered by Laura Kerbey and Harry Thompson.

Laura Kerbey is the founder of Positive Autism Support and Training and a Surrey Autism Champion and has over 19 years’ experience teaching children and teenagers with Autism Spectrum Conditions and associated conditions. Laura continues to work with schools, colleges and families who have children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions including PDA. In her morning workshop Laura will give an overview of PDA, discuss the anxiety that drives this condition and most importantly discuss strategies that can be adopted by parents and professionals to help support individuals with a demand avoidant profile.

Harry Thompson was born in Edgeware and grew up in Barnet (North London). He currently divides his time between Brighton & London. An avid reader & researcher, Harry speaks publicly and is heavily involved in projects & research on all topics around neurodiversity and Autism, namely, Pathological Demand Avoidance, a behaviour profile within the Autism Spectrum. He launched his YouTube channel in March of 2017 which has since amassed a strong following.

Harry began to write the first draft of his book in 2015. After connecting with many Autistic & PDA families, he pivoted his direction and completed his book in about 6 weeks, a memoir entitled the PDA Paradox: The Highs and Lows of My Life on a Little-Known Part of the Autism Spectrum, published in February 2019 by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

In his afternoon presentation Harry will talk about living with PDA from his own unique and witty perspective, There will be a Q&A session and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

This course is interactive and you will have the opportunity to discuss your ideas and experiences with others.
