It can be tricky for others to understand. The most obvious (but not only) characteristic of PDA is a determined avoidance of everyday demands. Demands can trigger a fear response in PDAers such as \u2018fight, flight, freeze, fawn or flop\u2019. Their brain is protecting them from the distress they are feeling. This is even the case with things they want to do and enjoy. It is also the case for things their body needs like going to the toilet or going to sleep. For PDAers expectations and demands can feel impossible. It is a case of \u201ccan\u2019t, not won\u2019t\u201d. Often for PDAers it\u2019s not just things they don\u2019t want to do which are avoided. This really shows the difference. PDAers can struggle to do what their body needs them to because it\u2019s an internal demand, for example a rumbling tummy might mean they can\u2019t eat. It\u2019s supporting them in a way that reduces anxiety and makes everyday life more manageable. Using traditional discipline and boundaries often leads to more distress and avoidance with PDAers. Using authority, consequences, or rewards to try and make a PDAer do what you are telling them to just makes the demand even bigger. They can then feel even more anxious and avoidant. Helping a PDAer means lowering demands and giving them control as much as is possible. Even if you are meeting up without your PDAer this can still apply. Asking about changes they can make to accommodate your child so they can still enjoy family visits or events.<span><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Build trust with your child: <\/strong>when they are interacting with your child, ask them to offer choice and flexibility and to speak to them like an equal. This can help build trust, reduce anxiety and make everyday situations easier.<span><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Learning more:<\/strong> reading PDA-friendly resources or books could grow their understanding.
