Roll Call for Autistic Parents
  • At least one parent on here suspects they are on the spectrum.

I am just interested if there are any other diagnosed parents like myself?
  • Hi, I am in the process of getting my step grandaughter aged 5 diagnosed with PDA. I am sure that her mum also has it and she herself agrees that this may be so. We also think that her mother shows alot of the characteristics. I have a step grandson who has the same chromosome disorder as mum and sibling and although he is only 20 months we do wonder about him. They have a duplication of chromosome 8 which is very rare so the geneticist is unable to say if there is a link. Do you know of any services which diagnose adults?
  • Well if it's on the NHS, the first point is to request a referral for autism assessment via the GP same as you would a child. The GP should use this screening tool (which the mum can complete to take along when making her request): http://docs.autismresearchcentre.com/tests/AQ10.pdf

If she wants a private assessment she could either search on the NAS website directory or search on the British Psychological Society: http://www.bps.org.uk/

But if she goes private she needs to check that the clinician is experienced in assessing adults and especially knowledgeable on female presentation.
