Getting diagnosed as an adult - Canada
  • Hello everyone,

I'm a 22 year old woman, and reading this website really hits me. I'm curious to know how to proceed with a possible diagnosis.

Currently, I am involved with the mental health system following an OCD diagnosis and hospitalization. This coming week, I will have an appointment with a new psychiatrist. I have never been diagnosed with autism throughout my whole life. Are there any adults out there in Canada (or other countries) who have taken the steps to be diagnosed. If so, what was your experience like? How can I properly address this and have the evidence to back it up?

Hi, welcome to the forum! I don't have experience of this myself but hopefully someone will be along soon who does. Have you seen this section which has some advice?

    Hi Barbiewaters

I do not have any personal experience but you may like to join our adult PDA forum and get some advice from there? We also have a list of facebook groups here:

    https://www.pdasociety.org.uk/resources/blogsandfacebookgroups

If you scroll down to the international groups there is a link to a canada facebook group for PDA adults and families of children with PDA.

I hope someone can help with more advice for you

    Hello ,
    https://judephilip.wordpress.com/autism-diagnostic-assessments/
This Independant Diagnostic Team are near Edinburgh Scotland , they are on the PDA Society recommended list , offer both Pre and full diagnostic assessments for Adults . They may be able to offer you a pre assessment over Zoom ( Skype ) . They are a wonderful Team who have recently diagnosed my youngest son with PDA at 21 .
    I hope this helps .

    Hi Barbiewaters

I've been on the forum since 2004 and have conversed with a few adults from Canada and America.
As PDA doesn't appear to be a commonly recognised diagnosis in Canada, it appears that the common diagnosis is Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified or Atypical Autism.

All 3 are close but not exactly correct. The most accurate diagnosis is 'ASD with a Profile of PDA'.

The main reason the above 3 are not totally accurate is that the Strategies to help to manage/support an individual with the PDA Profile of ASD are different to those for the other conditions.

You would need to be Assessed by a Clinical Psychologist (and Psychiatrist) for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some countries have specific Autism Diagnostic Team that assess for Aspergers Syndrome, Autism and hopefully PDA.

I hope you can find out who assesses/diagnoses ASD's in your area.
